Many thanks to Kalhan Jogireddy for the following report.
Last weekend, I had the opportunity to represent Buckinghamshire County at the National County Team Championships.
Whilst preparing for the weekend, we knew the format of the teams event on the Saturday, so we were able to try the different permutations of order for the shooters; eventually landing at Tan Quach (Shenley Archers), Imran Rehman (Whiteleaf Bowmen) then myself (South Bucks Archers).
On the Saturday, the weather was fairly dry, which is unheard of for Lilleshall, with a sunny spell in the early parts of the morning, creating a strong glare on the targets! The Bucks gents team seeded 12th (with Tan scoring a PB!!). This earned us a bye to the 1/8 round. Here, we unfortunately lost 6-0 to a very strong shooting from Gloucestershire.
On the other hand Sunday saw strong gusty winds at times pushing arrows off our bows! The Sunday was the mixed/pair county teams. We had a tier 1 team made up of Tan and a tier 2 team comprising of Imran and myself.
The tier 1 team seeded 17th, then in the h2h match Bucks won the first set but lost the next 3.
The tier 2 pair had a good qualifying score, seeding us 5th out of 20, giving us a bye to the 1/8 round. The Bucks team started off weak, losing the first two sets, 4-0 to Somerset. After which, we changed the order of archers, where we were able to even the match and take it to a shoot off.
During the shoot-off, Bucks scored a 15, and Somerset scored a 9, taking the Bucks pair through to the 1/4 pass. Here, we faced Gloucestershire and started slow, narrowly missing the first set by 4 points. Gloucestershire took the next set, giving them a 4-0 lead. Bucks were able to answer back with a strong 3rd set, making the score 4-2. However, narrowly losing the final set by 4 points again (28-32).
This gave our Bucks team a final ranking of 6th!
I would thoroughly recommend this county champs weekend to all archers! Many archers there on the day were shooting at competition for the first time!
